<p>People say you know you’re in love when you always want to make life better for them. When you go the extra mile to make them happy. This is true for Chikezie, who surprised his wife, Nwamaka, with a car, using his investments on Rise.</p>

<h2><strong>Tell us a little bit about yourselves</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> My name is Ibe Chikezie Raymond, and I live in Lagos. I’m a businessman and have been in business for over 13 years now.</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> I’m Nwamaka Ibe, a prospective pharmacist. I’m currently a 300 level pharmacy student at the University of Lagos.</p>



<h2><strong>How long have you two been married?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> We’ve been married for 6yrs now, and it’s been an interesting journey because I‘m married to the man I love.</p>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> It’s just like she said; we’re really enjoying our marriage, not enduring it. And that is the most important thing about marriage— marrying someone that you love.</p>



<h2><strong>Do you manage your finances together as a couple?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> I won’t really say we combine our finances together. We don’t have a joint bank account or shared investment. Instead, we independently manage our finances without feeling obligated to synchronise with each other, without pressure and it’s working for us.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> He’s absolutely right. While we maintain financial independence, giving each other the space and freedom to do what pleases us with our money, he occasionally invests in my name.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>Aww, so sweet. Which of you is better with money?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> Sincerely, he manages money better than I do.</p>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> She is right. Before we got married, I had been investing, even in insurance companies. I believe in the practice of saving and investing, to the extent that we set aside a portion of any funds we receive before spending. I even introduced my wife to a savings technique called &#8220;pako savings&#8221; whereby we set aside money before spending. Though initially challenging for her, after 6-8 months, we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of money we had saved. I have always been committed to saving and feel that I manage our finances better than she does.</p>



<h2><strong>What are your thoughts on investing as a couple?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> Well, I think it all depends on the couple involved and how they want to go about it because investing can be a very critical aspect of some couple’s lives. For us, we think investing individually is a good way to go and it’s going well for us. However, some may not like the idea , and will want to do it jointly.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> My husband is a chronic investor, and as a result, there may be instances where we hold varying views regarding investment decisions. We have therefore allowed ourselves the freedom to make individual financial decisions. As my husband mentioned, this approach has proven to be effective for us.</p>



<h2><strong>Love it! So how long have you been on Rise?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> My experience with Risevest has been reminiscent of a Nigerian movie. I first learned of Risevest through MoneyAfrica, as I subscribe to their monthly newsletter. Upon discovering that Risevest was dollar-denominated, I became intrigued, despite my prior investments being in naira and Nigerian real estate. I believed that such an investment would provide me with hedging protection against naira depreciation. However, I initially had reservations and it took me a year to fully embrace the platform. During this time, I conducted extensive research and only invested a small amount of $10 as a test. I reasoned that even if I lost the money, it wouldn&#8217;t be a significant setback. After a year, I gained the confidence to invest more frequently, and I activated the auto-investment feature to ensure that I didn&#8217;t miss out. The experience has been excellent thus far, and both my spouse and I have benefited from it. My wife has always been supportive of my investment ideas, and we have both become avid Risevest investors. Our journey has been nothing short of amazing.</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> We didn’t join at the same time. But like he said, I always trust his judgement, even though I sometimes get sceptical about some of these investment platforms. <p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> I currently have a real estate plan. But I had to liquidate my fixed income plan to buy my wife a car. So I currently just have the &#8220;Real Estate and Build Wealth&#8221; plans. However, I have some goals for the real estate plan. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve been on auto-investment, so I intend to use whatever annual returns I make from it to pay for my house rent here in Lagos.</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> I currently have only a Real Estate plan.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>What are your favourite features on the app?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> I love the fact that it’s an automated platform; After depositing my funds, I can sit back and allow Risevest to handle the investing on my behalf. I find it satisfying to watch my investments grow without having to actively manage them. Additionally, I find the Risevest mobile app to be very user-friendly, which is another aspect that I appreciate.</p>

<h2><strong>What are you looking to achieve financially in the next five years on Rise?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> Our financial goal is to attain independence, which we believe can be achieved through financial freedom. We understand that accumulating wealth is not only about how much income you earn, but also how much you are able to save. Investment is largely dependent on saving, and without the ability to save, investing becomes impossible. Therefore, our strategy is to continue investing in Risevest, with the aim of owning a home in Lagos and accomplishing other financial objectives within the next five years.</p>



<h2><strong>What do you think about marriage and love as an investment?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> Investing in a marriage is crucial as it can impact one&#8217;s future happiness. A personal example would be my own experience. Despite having already completed a bachelor&#8217;s and master&#8217;s degree, my husband, who was involved in the pharmaceutical business, encouraged me to pursue a degree in pharmacy. This was because he believed that having a basic understanding of the industry would benefit our business in the long run, given the stringent regulations that come with it. His encouragement motivated me to pursue this course of action even after obtaining a master&#8217;s degree. It is evident that my husband also made an investment in our marriage for our future success.</p>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> I totally agree with what my wife said.</p>



<h2><strong>What advice do you have for anyone looking to start investing?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> From my experience so far, my only regret with investing is that I didn’t start on time. So I encourage people to start early, no matter how much they earn. Find a way to save, so you can also start investing. Not making enough is never an excuse; you have to always put something aside. You can achieve it. I’m a living testimony. So I’d basically say to start on time and be patient because it takes time. Focus on the long-term, not the short-term. It’s very important.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> Based on my personal experience using Risevest, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to begin investing in the global market. <h2><strong>What advice do you have for anyone looking to get married?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> For individuals who desire to enter into matrimony, I strongly recommend that they prioritise self-discovery. It is no longer the era where women solely focus on being housewives. As a woman, it is crucial to possess a career or engage in some form of business. Furthermore, having qualities that any prospective partner would desire is equally essential. In my case, when I encountered my spouse, she possessed all the qualities that I sought, which spurred me on to marry her.</p>



<p>For men, if one lacks a sense of purpose, it is not advisable to consider marriage. Instead, it is recommended to find a job, start a business, or pursue any other meaningful venture that provides an income. It is fundamental to have a source of earnings to cater for one&#8217;s spouse. In the absence of financial stability, it is impossible to take care of a partner properly. If, for instance, I lacked financial resources, I would have been unable to provide for my beautiful wife.</p>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> He has said it all. Self discovery is vital for both partners. It is essential to prepare emotionally, psychologically, financially, and in all other relevant aspects. It is not a one-sided affair as both parties must be ready. Hence, it is imperative to ensure that each partner has the necessary qualities and characteristics needed for a successful union. By doing so, they will be adequately equipped to handle the demands of a committed relationship. In summary, readiness for marriage is a joint responsibility that requires thorough preparation on all fronts.</p>



<h2><strong>In the spirit of women’s month whose theme is #EmbraceEquity, what are some of the things you think society can do to achieve equity for women?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Nwamaka:</strong> Part of it will be encouraging women to be financially independent. It’s very important. It’s not a cool thing for a woman to be totally dependent on the man for her financial needs. So we have to enlighten women to get their hands busy, and also encourage them to save as much as they can, from the little they make in order for them to achieve financial freedom, and to be able to assist their partners whenever the need arises.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> She’s said everything. Financial independence should be the goal and hallmark of society to ensure that women are encouraged to be independent and actively save and invest. Anybody can earn or make money; it’s no longer a man’s responsibility, women too can make money and bring something to the table. That should be a goal which we must all pursue to achieve gender equity in the society.</p>



<h2><strong>What do you want to say to your wife in this month of women?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Chikezie:</strong> Angel, you’re a wonderful person, my friend and my lover. We’ll do this journey together forever. God will see us through, and someday, when we are both old, we’ll look back and see how far we’ve made it together.</p>


I Promised My Wife A Car, And Thanks To Rise, I Was Able To Buy One For Her: Chikezie And Nwamaka’s Love Story.


<p>This past week, one of the biggest tech-focused banks, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), went into receivership, which means that they shut down their operations and will be returning customer deposits through the FDIC.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The primary trigger was that they experienced a bank run, a situation where depositors try to withdraw in a rush leading to insufficient capital to meet that demand. Banks are required to collect deposits and invest them into assets, mainly loans and other financial securities. During the low interest rate period, SVB bought long term (ten year) bonds, which yielded below 2%.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This was fine when interest rates were close to 0% but quickly became insufficient when rates went above 4%. As their depositors demanded higher rates, SVB needed to switch their ten year bonds to other assets with higher yields.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The problem is that there are only two ways to get out of a ten year bond: sitting on it for ten years, or selling it earlier than its maturity. And because the original yields were low, the bond prices have dropped to reflect the higher yield environment. So when SVB sold, they sold at a loss. They then raised some additional capital ($2B+) to cover that loss and keep them at par with their deposits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, in the process of doing that, it became apparent that much of their assets that they were sitting on effectively billions of unrealized losses, which may require more capital raises to cover.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That meant they were technically insolvent, spooking manySVB’s investors and depositors, many of whom are startups. They started to move their funds out of the bank,&nbsp; leading to a bank run and forcing the bank into receivership.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>What happens now? </strong></h2>



<p>The US Treasury Department and the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) put out a statement informing the markets that all depositors can withdraw their funds starting from today, March 13th. This news sent relief to all the worried depositors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The biggest worry for the market right now is that a lot of companies and investors in the US tech industry might be impacted by this collapse, which might then lead to further job losses and a recession. However, with this statement from the Treasury and FDIC, this is not likely to be the case. FDIC has handled more than 500 Bank liquidations since 2001, and it seems clear that this situation is well within their ability to manage.</p>



<p>For our users who still have questions, our company and products have no exposure or relationship with SVB as an institution. We bank with traditional banks with long histories and longer balance sheets. Also, the assets we are heavily exposed to— value and high quality stocks, long term rental properties, consumer and corporate credit— are usually the least impacted or the slowest to be impacted in a recession. We also take great care to manage the assets, such that many of the known risks are accounted for. You can rest assured that we, as your asset managers, take our risk management duties seriously.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some of the reasons, in our opinion, why SVB also experienced this, is overexposure to a single industry: tech made up the majority of their borrowers and majority of their deposits. This circular relationship meant that during the recent slow down in tech, their deposits would be drying up almost at the same time their borrowers’ credit would be worsening.</p>



<p>They also invested in locked down ten year duration assets for short term demand deposits, a duration mismatch. Since these are likely the primary reasons SVB went under, coupled with the swift action of the Treasury and FDIC, the risks of a contagion are not as high as we might worry.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>As long-term net buyers of assets, we always build and invest with a mindset of being recession-ready and to be in a position to buy assets cheaply during turbulent periods. Whatever happens, Rise will always stay on top of the markets to ensure your money is managed with utmost safety and care.&nbsp;</p>

Breaking Down SVB’s Fall from Grace

<p>According to <a href="https://hbr.org/2020/11/be-a-better-ally">Harvard Business </a><u>Review, wome</u>n often have to navigate challenges and obstacles that their male colleagues do not have to consider. They face a persistent wage gap, are often underrepresented in leadership positions, and may even have to deal with biases and microaggressions from their coworkers.</p>



<p>Although institutions have more of a role to play, male allies are not left out in the fight for workplace equity. Men committed to promoting gender equity and supporting their female colleagues are critical in creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace. But being a male ally is not just about showing support; it&#8217;s about taking active steps toward dismantling the structures and attitudes perpetuating gender inequity.</p>



<h2><strong>Here’s how you can achieve that: Educate Yourself</strong></h2>



<p>Asking women about their experiences with unfairness and injustice can be a valuable way to learn about the challenges they face in the workplace and society. However, relying solely on women to educate men about these issues can put a heavy burden on them. It can also be limiting, as women&#8217;s experiences are diverse and complex and may not represent all women.</p>



<p>Hence, it is important to take the time to educate yourself and do your research. This can involve reading books, articles, and research on gender issues, attending workshops and training sessions on gender equity and diversity and seeking out resources and information from various sources.</p>



<p>By educating yourself, you can gain a deeper understanding of the systemic barriers and challenges that women face in the workplace and beyond and how you can help close up the gap.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>Listen and Learn</strong></h2>



<p>One of the most important things you can do as a male ally is to listen to the experiences of your female colleagues. Listen to their stories and the challenges they face. Ask questions to gain a better understanding of their experiences, and seek out resources to learn more about the issues they face. Remember that you don&#8217;t have to have all the answers and that it&#8217;s okay to be uncomfortable or uncertain sometimes. What&#8217;s important is that you are committed to learning and supporting your colleagues. Some questions you can ask include:&nbsp;</p>



<ul><li>How can I improve your experience as a colleague?&nbsp;</li><li>What can I do to make this workplace better for you and contribute to a fair playing ground?</li><li>Are there some of my actions that make you feel left out and how can I be better?</li></ul>



<h2><strong>Own and Use Your Privilege</strong></h2>



<p>As a man, it&#8217;s important to acknowledge that you may have certain privileges and advantages in the workplace simply because of your gender. This can include being more likely to be heard and taken seriously, having greater access to professional networks and resources, and facing fewer barriers to advancement in your career.</p>



<p>However, as an ally to women in the workplace, you can use your privilege and position of power to amplify the voices of your female colleagues and help them to be heard. This can involve actively listening to their ideas and perspectives, advocating for their ideas in meetings and discussions, and using your voice to support and uplift them.</p>



<p>For example, if a female colleague&#8217;s idea is dismissed or ignored in a meeting, you can reiterate her point, ensuring it is heard and considered. You can also make a point to actively include your female colleagues in discussions and decision-making processes, ensuring their perspectives are valued and represented.</p>



<p>By using your privilege to advocate for your female colleagues and create opportunities for them to advance in their careers, you can help to break down the systemic barriers and biases that prevent women from achieving fairness in the workplace.</p>



<h2><strong>Address Biases and Microaggressions, and be an Active Bystander.</strong></h2>



<p>Biases and microaggressions are pervasive and can have a significant impact on the experiences of women in the workplace. These can take many forms, from being talked over in meetings to being subject to sexist comments or jokes, harassment or discrimination. Biases can also be present in decision-making processes, such as hiring, promotions, and performance evaluations.</p>



<p>As a male ally, it is necessary to be aware of these issues and to speak out against them when you see them happening. Remember, your actions can make a difference and help create a safer and fairer workplace for women.</p>



<h2><strong>Create a Supportive Culture</strong></h2>



<p>Help to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, supportive, and respectful of all employees. This can include advocating for policies that support work-life balance, such as flexible work arrangements and parental leave. It can also mean creating opportunities for employees to connect and build relationships with one another, such as through social events or mentorship programs. Temporary Pause of the US Virtual Bank Account Feature


<p>Money is a critical aspect of our lives. It gives us the means to purchase the things we need, the experiences we want, and the security we crave. And one of the most effective ways to build long-term wealth is through investing. However, for many years, women have had to face historic and social disadvantages that have prevented them from operating a level-playing field as men, experiencing the world as freely as they would love to, and achieving financial equity to build long-term wealth through investing. These disadvantages range from cultural biases to a lack of financial education.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While equality avails everyone the same thing, equity provides everyone access to the right tools, opportunities and resources that they need to achieve whatever they need to achieve. For example, if Femi and Ginika were to share 600,000 naira, with equality, each person gets 300,000 regardless of what they need. With equity, each person gets an amount based on the level of their needs. Hence, the person with the higher need gets more money. This also applies to resources and opportunities.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Cultural Bias</strong></h2>



<p>Cultural bias is one of the most significant barriers that women face when it comes to investing. Historically, investing has been viewed as a male-dominated activity, and women have been discouraged from participating in financial markets. Even today, many women are still subject to societal pressures that suggest that they should leave investment decisions to men or other financial professionals.</p>



<p>These cultural biases often result in women being more risk-averse than men when it comes to investing. Women tend to avoid riskier investments, such as stocks, in favour of safer options like bonds or savings accounts. This cautious approach can lead to missed opportunities for growth and long-term wealth building.</p>



<p>To overcome cultural biases, women must first recognize that investing is not just for men. Women are just as capable as men when it comes to making sound investment decisions. Furthermore, investing can be a critical tool in achieving financial independence and security. <h2>Lack of Financial Education</h2>



<p>The lack of financial education is another significant barrier that prevents women from achieving financial equity through investing. According to a study by BlackRock, only 51% of women surveyed felt confident making investment decisions, compared to 67% of men.</p>



<p>One of the reasons for this disparity is that women often require a different level of financial education than men. Women tend to approach investing with different priorities and goals, such as planning for retirement or saving for their children&#8217;s education. Women may also have different financial responsibilities, such as caring for ageing parents or managing a household budget, which can impact their investment decisions.</p>

This can include providing information on financial planning, risk management, and investment strategies that are relevant to women&#8217;s goals and priorities. <h2>Lack of Representation</h2>



<p>The lack of representation of women in the financial industry has been a persistent issue for many years. According to a study conducted by the CFA Institute, women account for only 18% of the global investment profession. This underrepresentation of women in the financial industry can have significant consequences, particularly when investing.</p>



<p>One of the key consequences of the lack of representation of women in the financial industry is gender bias in investment recommendations and decision-making. Research has shown that gender bias is prevalent in the financial industry, with women often perceived as less competent and less confident than men. Despite this, our stock portfolio posted a 4.77% increase, beating the index this month.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We added the highly popular Crocs, Inc to the portfolio this month and pharmaceutical company, Assertio, which is already up 15% this month alone. We also continued to add to our positions in the overall portfolio, all of which helped to boost our performance. As always, our focus is to select and own high-quality companies regardless of market moves.</p>

<p>We closed two new properties for our real estate portfolio, which we should rent out within the next month for additional returns for real estate investors. This month, the returns on our portfolio were a stable 1.1%. The US real estate market continued to experience price drops, as higher cost of capital makes mortgages less affordable. However, rental demand remains strong, and housing supply is still low, so returns should remain stable if we don&#8217;t experience a recession. With summer approaching, Airbnb demand is through the roof, and we expect to deploy more capital toward short-term rentals in the coming months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Our fixed income return for this month was 0.83%. The outlook for fixed income markets generally is stable. While credit quality has deteriorated in some markets and higher rates have raised costs for most issuers, liquidity has remained very high, and demand has grown. For our portfolio, recession expectations are the only cloud on the horizon, which is currently a 50/50 possibility. However, we continue to monitor developments to ensure that our portfolio risks are well-managed and our investors can comfortably navigate any turbulence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This year, we continue to modify our portfolio to reflect the current market realities. One of those moves include parting ways with one of our favorite companies, Block Inc.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Our thesis on Block (NYSE: SQ) was built around their consumer finance efforts and their emphasis on expanding consumer opportunities in crypto/blockchain technology. However, this was hurt by the meltdown in the crypto market, but we decided to stick with Block for other reasons. The first is that they are still growing strongly, with revenues of $4.5B in November last year, and growing 17% yearly. When you exclude their crypto trade business, their regular operating businesses (Cashapp, Seller ecosystems) grew an even more impressive 36%. The years before 2022, revenue was growing at even faster rates.</p>



<h2>So why sell now?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Much of Block’s revenue growth has not translated into profits and free cash-flow for the company. While we understand some growth in marketing and customer acquisition costs, the consistent growth in general, administrative, and personnel expenses bothered us. Block’s operating costs have grown at an average of 60.4% in recent quarters, much faster than revenues and multiples higher than profitability. Runaway costs have generally been a feature of Jack Dorsey-led companies, and after watching this number for a while, we lost confidence in the ability or willingness of the company to rein in these costs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is a big negative signal to us, given the era of higher interest rates, lower liquidity, tough economic conditions, and a potential recession. With the drop in stock prices, we believe there are more compelling and better-positioned companies to invest in for a better risk-adjusted return.</p>



<p>We believe Block is an incredible company with a compelling product and opportunity ahead of it, and will remain on our watch list till its thesis makes sense for our portfolio.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Hi Susan, can you introduce yourself to us?</strong></h2>



<p>My name is Oreoluwa Osinuga. I’m a sales manager, currently working in a wine and spirit company. I also run a personal perfume business and I live in Surulere, Lagos.</p>



<h2><strong>What was childhood like for you?</strong></h2>



<p>I’d say great. I’m from a family of four; my parents, myself, and my brother. I think we lived a very sheltered life while growing up, and one of the things I learnt from my mother was how to do business. She had a lot of businesses that she did, from rentals to ice blocks to popcorn. She also owned a provision store and watching her do these things was quite interesting. She also helped my brother and me to cultivate the habit of saving. So that always made me want something I could fall back on, like savings, in case anything went wrong. When I was in university and still collecting my allowance, I always made sure I left about ₦10,000 without touching it. I also did other things growing up. I sold novels when I was in secondary school. I also sold provisions like eggs and noodles at the university. Growing up was interesting.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>Did that in any way shape all the things you do today?</strong></h2>



<p>Yes. Yes, actually. While I began to build my capital through the different things I mentioned I did, I needed something solid to do. At the time, I wasn’t much of a spender; I needed a lot of convincing to buy something. I’d ask myself if it was something I really wanted or worth spending my money on. For me, perfumes were the one thing that I liked and could buy without being persuaded. And because I liked them personally, I knew selling them wouldn’t be difficult. I would do that from a place of likeness, as they brought me joy. When I started, I remember starting with perfume oils and a capital of about ₦10,000. Now, I invest even more in the business and have grown a lot since that time.</p>



<h2><strong>Interesting. Can you tell us more about the perfume business? What has the journey been like?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The journey has been good, even though it’s a saturated market. While growing up, I realised I was more of a business person than a skills person. Skills here means crafts like makeup, sewing, and artistry. I started a makeup business, spending so much money on it, but it eventually failed. It was a total waste that my brother kept reminding me of it and making fun of me. Ultimately, it felt like I had just bought the makeup items for myself. I didn’t get it right, which made me feel downcasted. I felt like people were doing and getting it right, so why wasn’t I? Why was I so horrible at it?&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>Oh, this is really sad.</strong></h2>



<p>Yes, it was. But then I figured my calling could probably be buying and selling, not doing handwork or being creative. That inspired my journey, in addition to the fact that I love to smell nice. It was something that I liked and thought would be easy to sell to people. When I started, it wasn’t a lot. I started very small, with my family and friends supporting me.</p>



<p>I also remember starting on Twitter, where I had people glued to the business; they supported me and made referrals. It’s been amazing. I mean, I have gotten a lot of clients, sales, and contacts from the business. I’m probably not the whole creative type of person. You know how you create a perfume Instagram page, making it all attractive and coming up with creative ideas for it? That’s not where my business is yet. But in terms of sales and profits, I know how much I make, even though it might not be so loud to everyone. I’ve also been able to retain customers. Many returning customers tried me out at first, were impressed by my services, and decided to come back again. These people have been with me for years, including those that have left the country.</p>



<h2><strong>Speaking of, you mentioned working in sales. How do you navigate that as a woman?</strong></h2>



<p>My personal experience as a woman in sales is that you get more help when you are a lady. I worked in the open market and I had distributors that helped me achieve my target because they saw me as their daughter. My petite stature also made them listen to my persuasion more, which I leveraged by going to meet them with a childish look that screamed “help me”</p>



<p>In terms of any form of harassment, if you are in sales, you always have to find a way to tactically manoeuvre it.</p>



<h2><strong>Must be really hard</strong></h2>



<p>Absolutely. Navigating sales is so much work, especially as a woman. You have to be friendly, even if it means pretending. Fake smiling is also quite common in sales.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>So sorry about that. Let’s talk about money now. What are your thoughts on investing?</strong></h2>



<p>Investing is important. I love investing. However, I haven’t invested much recently because I lost my money on some investments. I used to be an investment addict but have returned to taking medium risks. Losing money brings you back to your senses, which is why Risevest has been it for me; they offer decent returns and safety, not ridiculous interest rates. I have invested in various companies, including agro ones, and lost money. I also know some people like my mother and brother who lost their money in such investments. So that taught me a lesson and has reduced the risks I take. However, investing is quite good. Even though the current exchange rate is terrible for the economy, it has helped me as I leveraged that to invest in dollar assets. At the beginning of the year, I had a financial goal in mind that I didn’t even know if I would reach, but I just wanted to try. I kept saving on Rise, and thanks to the exchange rate, I met and surpassed that goal. It gave me the confidence that I could do more.</p>



<h2><strong>That’s cool. What are your thoughts on budgeting?</strong></h2>



<p>I write down my expenses for every month. I have bills that I pay, so I budget how much I spend on each of them. I do this after I have combined the income from my perfume business and the salary from my 9-5. Then whatever profit I have left, based on the financial goal I have, I decide if there’s anything else I want to spend on or if I want to save. But I make sure that I have a budget for everything.</p>



<h2><strong>Let’s talk about Rise. How long have you been on Rise, and how has the journey been?</strong></h2>



<p>It’s been more than a year, and the journey has been incredible. I even regret not actively using the product when I first joined. Initially, I wasn’t sure about it, so I was just randomly putting my money in similar fintech savings and investment platforms. I was also doing everything, including crypto. I don’t even want to think about my loss on these investments. It’s also not good to be greedy. There was a time I made so much profit and could have removed it. Everyone told me to, but I thought it would still grow more. Even when it dropped, I refused to remove it and kept hoping it’d bounce back and make more gains until it became sawdust.</p>

Just have a reserve; it is crucial. As I said earlier, I saved a certain amount from my parents&#8217; allowance during my university days. I have imbibed this habit till now. It&#8217;s always in my mind to grow my money. For instance, when I have ₦10k, I want my next money to be ₦20k. I have always wanted that; to increase my finances.</p>



<p>For those looking to start a career in sales, be sure you&#8217;re ready for stress because sales is pressure-filled and demanding. Sometimes, you look back to ask if you really want to continue with this because, as much as other departments have their KPIs and targets, salespeople bring in the money. The pressure is always intense, so you just have to be sure it is something you can do before you go into it. Also, you must be on the road most of the time if you&#8217;re in sales. If you dislike being on the road, you probably shouldn&#8217;t be in sales. I&#8217;m a very restless person, so I don&#8217;t like being in one place. And getting used to sales, I can&#8217;t do a full-time office job now. Flexibility is also crucial. To be in sales, you have to be very flexible. That&#8217;s all I can say.</p>



<p>The year is wrapping up, and many of us are already closing out on our finances. First, we hope you learned a lot and accomplished some of your financial goals in 2022. It has been an incredibly rocky year to be an investor, and the effects of inflation have been tough to manage.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, as we enter the last month of the year, it&#8217;s time to consolidate the wins and prepare ourselves financially for the coming year. So we have compiled a short list of four things you should do before 2023. Here&#8217;s that list below:</p>



<h2><strong>Take Stock of 2022</strong></h2>



<p>Review your income this year. How much have you made in total from all income sources? How much have you spent? How much did you save and invest? What did you spend your money on? What goals did you achieve, and which were deferred or cancelled? Be able to articulate and understand your financial history in 2022 so that you can extract the lessons, adjust your plans and decide what to focus on, what to do more or less of and what your financial goals should be in 2023. This process will be much easier if you&#8217;ve been maintaining a budget throughout the year.</p>



<h2><strong>Understand the Lessons of History</strong></h2>



<p>Everyone is currently worried about the bear market and all the economic uncertainty we&#8217;ve had to deal with this year, from rate hikes and inflation to geopolitical flare-ups and climate issues globally. There&#8217;s the temptation to become pessimistic and overly defensive about your finances and behave like this is the worst time in history. </p>



<p>But anyone who stops and takes a historical view will realise that times like these have come and gone before, and people not only preserved their wealth during such times but actually grew it. There has been double-digit inflation in the US before, and the world has had worse geopolitical issues. We&#8217;ve also had worse bear markets and stock market drops before. And things always bounce back. Markets recover. </p>



<p>Economies grow again. There is a path to navigating periods like these, and panicking and avoiding your long-term financial goals because you are worried about turbulence is not helpful. Take a longer view and stay the course.</p>



<h2><strong>Understand and settle your tax obligations&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>If you are under a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) setup, knowing if your employers are remitting all the required taxes is crucial. Have you paid any portion you are liable for? Is your tax clearance certificate up to date? Have all the numbers ready way before you need them. For people in the US, now is the time to gather all your tax records before next year’s filing deadlines. Make sure you sort out all these on your own so you can file your tax return early next year.</p>



<h2><strong>Check your investment portfolio&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>After the year, some of your investments have gained, and some have lost value. Now is the time to rebalance your investments to reflect your goals and the level of risk you can carry in your current reality. Are you more exposed to crypto than you should be at this point? Then push more of your money into safer investments like real estate. Make sure your portfolio aligns with your long-term investment plan and strategy. Are you investing enough to have enough retirement income? If you&#8217;re above 30, it&#8217;s almost mandatory that you&#8217;re investing at least 20% of your income now. If you&#8217;re below this number, cut expenses and step it up.</p>



<h2><strong>Set your 2023 goals</strong></h2>



<p>Once you&#8217;ve done all the above, then you are in a good position to set your financial goals for 2023, and develop a clear plan to achieve them. Mark them out, write them down, and put them somewhere you can see them. Now, you&#8217;re ready to flex your <em>Detty December</em> and usher in the new year in style. Don’t be enticed to spend money you were not going to spend. Only spend money on what you already need. Which means you should have a list of what you want to buy, and stick to it. That nice blender selling for 40% off is not meant for you, if you already have a blender at home. Don’t play yourself. Be disciplined.</span></span></p>
<h2><strong>Not Everything Is Cheaper On Friday</strong></h2>
<p>Don’t just think, <em>&#8220;Well, its Black Friday, so everything I buy is probably cheaper.&#8221;</em> It doesn’t work like that. Some outlets don’t do deep enough discounts. Some intentionally inflate their supposed original price to make their discounts look deeper than they are. To get the best deals, do price comparisons ahead of time, check many sites to know what a fair price is and if you’re actually getting a good deal or not. Bonus points if you already did this weeks or days ahead of time.</p>
<h2><strong>Have A Shopping Budget</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Please there is life after Black Friday. There is the Christmas season, and that three-month period between December 31st and January 31st. We all know that period. You need your money to last through all that. So know exactly how much you can put towards your Black Friday shopping and once you hit that amount, stop. Ties right back to point one. Don’t get carried away.</span></span></p>
<h2><strong>Some Things Are Cheaper Offline</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Black Friday seems to be an eCommerce driven activity. There are often better deals in the physical store, or in the open market. I’ve seen bargain hunters go offline, and find items at prices that make Black Friday deals look like daylight robbery. It may not be as convenient as ordering, but the savings might just be worth it. Another advantage of shopping offline is that you can leave your ATM/Credit card at home and only go with the money you’re willing to spend. If it’s gone, you’re done.</span></p>
